[EN] Updates, patches and support for SQL Server in year 2014…

As a standard, monthly patches arriving to SQL Administrators (better known as DBA or SQL DBA). Some of them are installed automaticaly, some not. Sometimes we use development stage for checking, sometimes we push updates directly to production systems. What we can expect in 2014?

FIRST

Most significant subject is end of mainstream support for SQL Server 2008 (build no 10.xx.xx) and SQL Server 2008 R2 (build no 10.50.xx). Based on Microsoft Lifecycle Policy Mainstream Support for this editions will end at 8th July, 2014. What is this policy?

Microsoft provides support on the current service pack, and in some cases the immediately preceding service pack, for the products listed below. See the Lifecycle Support Policy FAQ for details on the Service Pack Support Policy. If you have any questions regarding support for a product, please contact your Microsoft representative. If you need technical support, visit the Contact Microsoft Web site.

As we see mainstream support will end in July 2014, and extended support will end in September 2019. A lot of us wait for Service Pack 4 for SQL Server 2008 before support will end.

SECOND

Of course we can expect more cumulative updates, and even full Service Pack no 2 for SQL Server 2012. We still get a lots of updates for SQL Server 2012 with every Cumulative Updates – examples? over thirty with CU9 and CU8 and almost fifty in CU7. Is it time for Service Pack 2? Definitely YES. And on SQL Server Release Service blog {LINK} we can find a short annoucement: “We are planning to deliver Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2012 later this year” (by Jean-Yves Devant, Senior Program manager). It will be really great to have SP2 about holiday months.

THIRD

The newest, very fresh and young version of SQL Server are now on the market. Microsoft SQL Server 2014 has been released on July 1st and it is not a April Joke. Here is the initial annoucement of this premiere by Quentin Clark (Corporate Vice President) and Eron Kelly (General Manager at DPG) {LINK}. Whats new? >> In-Memory OLTP
>> In-Memory Updateable ColumnStore
>> Extending Memory to SSDs
>> Enhanced High Availability
      >> New AlwaysOn features
      >> Improved Online Database Operations
>> Encrypted Backup
>> IO Resource Governance
>> Hybrid Scenarios
      >> SQL Server Backup to Azure

okay, okay. How about updates? You probably remember my stories about updates for SQL Server 2012 {LINK}. Just few days after RTM, about one hundred updates has been delivered (only Oralce is better prepared for this). I’m really interesting how long we will wait for first Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2014 and of course… how many bug will be fixed this time. Time is counting!!!

But in the meantime – if you dodn’t start yet – let’s play with newest, very hot SQL Server. Of course I cannot forgot about SQL Server 2014 Express Edition. Here it is:

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express is a free, feature-rich edition of SQL Server that is ideal for learning, developing, powering desktop, web & small server applications, and for redistribution by ISVs. The SQL Server 2014 Express release includes the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio instead of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio Express.

You can download the following editions of Express from this page:

LocalDB (SqlLocalDB) LocalDB is a lightweight version of Express that has all its programmability features, yet runs in user mode and has a fast, zero-configuration installation and short list of pre-requisites. Use this if you need a simple way to create and work with databases from code. It can be bundled with Application and Database Development tools like Visual Studio and or embedded with an application that needs local databases.

Express (SQLEXPR) Express edition includes the SQL Server database engine only. Best suited to accept remote connections or administer remotely.

Express with Tools (SQLEXPRWT) This package contains everything needed to install and configure SQL Server as a database server including the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. Choose either LocalDB or Express depending on your needs above.

SQL Server Management Studio Express (SQLManagementStudio) This does not contain the database, but only the tools to manage SQL Server instances, including LocalDB, SQL Express, SQL Azure, full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio, etc. Use this if you already have the database and only need the management tools.

Express with Advanced Services (SQLEXPRADV) This package contains all the components of SQL Server Express including the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. This is a larger download than “with Tools,” as it also includes both Full Text Search and Reporting Services.
