[EN] A Review: SharePoint 2013 Developer Machine

I’m hungry. Not angry, just hungry. Why? I finished new book by Sahil Malik and Srini Sistla (is a book or not a book? Later). Last sentence:

From here, you can either take the IT pro route, the developer route, or the SharePoint designer route. But before we dive into any of those, let’s get some basic familiarization with, well – what the hell is using SharePoint like? In other words, let’s examine some of interesting SharePoint features, at least as far as the end user is concerned

Where the hell is next part? SharePoint 2013 Developer Machine is a Kindle book, not very big (just 81 pages) but very, very important for all SharePoint freaks. It’s does not matter: either You are newbie, admin, developer, expert – You not only should, but You must have knowledge about Developer Machine (in fact You must have The Machine) – especially for SharePoint (2010 or 2013).

BOOKLET__WS_SharePoint2013DevelopmentMachineFor less than 7 dollars You get chapters:

· Introduction and Credits,

· Virtualization Choice

· Local Development Environment

· Preparing A Single Machine Setup

· Setting Up Office Web Apps

· Installing Office Web Apps Server

· Summary

readable on any Kindle devices – in fact I have no one (all my Kindles are Kinndle App).

Is a book or not a book? Is a part of bigger project, 80 pages oriented for most important part for any SharePoint Administrators: The Development Environment. I still remember many of problems with my first SharePoint Production Environment without Development part (Yes, It sounds weird). Now the world has changed. We have…

Virtualization Choice – which is too productive to ignore. Now on one physical laptop, or servers or servers with storage, or network storage – in many ways we can use virtualization: VirtualBox, Boot to VHD, VMWare, Hyper-V, and The Cloud. Of course Physical Site Development Machine sound really good, but… You can’t get it with You, and You can’t work with them with Your favourite music (even is Rammstein, Gershwin, Karsh Kale or DJ Cheb I Sabbah). When You choose right option You should focus to…

Development Choice – depends of our business (and skills) You can use web browser, command line, SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio to developing Your solutions. As always different methods give You similar or different results, but You should know as much as possible about…

possibility of choosing right machine. First – You should think about disk: better SDD than SATA, memory: better 12GB than 8GB (but not always) and processor: better newest than older. Second – You should thing about performance: like mSATA SSD and speed: like single file and security: like RAID. Third – remember about anemia. And not fight with that: “Your Anemic Domain Controller with 20GB HDD and 768 K RAM” is enough.

Prerequisities is a huge list: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, SQL Server 2008 R2 x64, plus service packs, plus cumulative updates, plus security updates and before SharePoint 2013 x64: ,BET Framework 4.5, IIS Role, Application Role, WCF 5.0, MSIPC, PowerShell, AppFabric, WIF, Azure, Excel, MDS, RBS, Office, Silverlight, popular browsers. And when You collect everything You can…

Prepare Single Machine Setup where You spend one day. With many advices from Sahil Malik You will do it quick, but remember about documenting Your environment from the beginning. Which advices? dcpromo, fqdn, dns, designer, sql server instance features and shared features, preparation tool, port 40000, web server extension 15 and many, many more. For SharePoint 2010 Installation and configuration was enough. For SharePoint 2013 we have something special called…

Office Web Apps which is something new, something interesting, something administrator’s time consuming, something users experience improving (hope You’ll understanding me). In this part You can learn how install second machine, office web apps, prerequisites and (!!!) PowerShell. Questions? Get-Help. After that, after meeting WOPI, after SSL with FQDN and simple configuration

You will be hungry. Like me.
