[EN]/[RU] April’s Speaking Engagement

After many conferences in Poland and Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (review of the series will be posting soon) time for next speaking outside Poland. This time i’m going to the East. In seven days (next Thursday) Microsoft Office in Moscow and Russian SQL Folks organizing special event oriented for new SQL Server 2014. Code name of this event is Data Platform Day. Of course when we talk about  Data Platform we shoudn’t forget about Windows Azure, Windows Server, System Center, Windows Intune and Visual Database Tools. All of those subjects will be covered at this event. My role at this event (except improving my Russian language skills) – by special warm invitation from Andrey Korsnikov {TWITTER} will be member of Ask The Expert Group. I don’t know how I will do that because many interesting sessions will be providing there by well known speakers – just a few names:

  • Алексей Халяко, Azure архитектор, Microsoft
  • Сергей Олонцев, MCM, MVP
  • Андрей Резник, специалист по решению SQL Server PDW, Microsoft
  • Дмитрий Костылев, MVP, Лаборатория Касперского
  • Жанна Кривозубова, менеджер по развитию направления "Корпоративная мобильность", Microsoft
  • Андрей Коршиков, MVP SQL Server , Microsoft

Full schedule for this event are here: Программа конференции – Data Platform Day

Of course, travelling to only Moscow doesn’t make sense, so in nine days (next Saturday), I will speak. Another SQL Saturday (after SQL Sat in Budapest) will be in Krasnodar (colose, but not too close to Sochi). In the heart of Kuban Wine District I will provide one or two sessions: confirmed session is about SQL Server Cource Control, and un-confirmed my favourite: 2AM. A Disaster just began… Well. Other speakers will presenting some interesting sessions:

[EN] Updates, patches and support for SQL Server in year 2014…

As a standard, monthly patches arriving to SQL Administrators (better known as DBA or SQL DBA). Some of them are installed automaticaly, some not. Sometimes we use development stage for checking, sometimes we push updates directly to production systems. What we can expect in 2014?

FIRST

Most significant subject is end of mainstream support for SQL Server 2008 (build no 10.xx.xx) and SQL Server 2008 R2 (build no 10.50.xx). Based on Microsoft Lifecycle Policy Mainstream Support for this editions will end at 8th July, 2014. What is this policy?

Microsoft provides support on the current service pack, and in some cases the immediately preceding service pack, for the products listed below. See the Lifecycle Support Policy FAQ for details on the Service Pack Support Policy. If you have any questions regarding support for a product, please contact your Microsoft representative. If you need technical support, visit the Contact Microsoft Web site.

As we see mainstream support will end in July 2014, and extended support will end in September 2019. A lot of us wait for Service Pack 4 for SQL Server 2008 before support will end.

SECOND

Of course we can expect more cumulative updates, and even full Service Pack no 2 for SQL Server 2012. We still get a lots of updates for SQL Server 2012 with every Cumulative Updates – examples? over thirty with CU9 and CU8 and almost fifty in CU7. Is it time for Service Pack 2? Definitely YES. And on SQL Server Release Service blog {LINK} we can find a short annoucement: “We are planning to deliver Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2012 later this year” (by Jean-Yves Devant, Senior Program manager). It will be really great to have SP2 about holiday months.

okay, okay. How about updates? You probably remember my stories about updates for SQL Server 2012 {LINK}. Just few days after RTM, about one hundred updates has been delivered (only Oralce is better prepared for this). I’m really interesting how long we will wait for first Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2014 and of course… how many bug will be fixed this time. Time is counting!!!

But in the meantime – if you dodn’t start yet – let’s play with newest, very hot SQL Server. Of course I cannot forgot about SQL Server 2014 Express Edition. Here it is:

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express is a free, feature-rich edition of SQL Server that is ideal for learning, developing, powering desktop, web & small server applications, and for redistribution by ISVs. The SQL Server 2014 Express release includes the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio instead of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio Express.

You can download the following editions of Express from this page:

LocalDB (SqlLocalDB) LocalDB is a lightweight version of Express that has all its programmability features, yet runs in user mode and has a fast, zero-configuration installation and short list of pre-requisites. Use this if you need a simple way to create and work with databases from code. It can be bundled with Application and Database Development tools like Visual Studio and or embedded with an application that needs local databases.

Express (SQLEXPR) Express edition includes the SQL Server database engine only. Best suited to accept remote connections or administer remotely.

Express with Tools (SQLEXPRWT) This package contains everything needed to install and configure SQL Server as a database server including the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. Choose either LocalDB or Express depending on your needs above.

SQL Server Management Studio Express (SQLManagementStudio) This does not contain the database, but only the tools to manage SQL Server instances, including LocalDB, SQL Express, SQL Azure, full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio, etc. Use this if you already have the database and only need the management tools.

Express with Advanced Services (SQLEXPRADV) This package contains all the components of SQL Server Express including the full version of SQL Server 2014 Management Studio. This is a larger download than “with Tools,” as it also includes both Full Text Search and Reporting Services.
